I think of Jefferson, Emerson, John Brown, MLK as embodying Americanism (in a positive sense).
Then there's a whole bunch of negative Americans: Rockefeller and JP Morgan, Disney and Elvis and Michael Jackson, Nixon and Reagan, etc.
It's got to do with sincerity.

These days I don't think there's a single sincere American left. Modern-day American spirit is thoroughly compromised. Whoever's the biggest sellout and fake is most American.
