The horror stories are based on, or at least inspired by, genuine problems, but wildly exaggerated. It remains and has always been much, much nicer than its reputation.It has declined over the last couple of decades, though, and not just in the ways /pol/ has told you about. Tech monoculture and rising rents have driven out most of the creative and interesting people, and squeezed the have-nots harder and harder, making the place simultaneously seedier and more sterile.
One of the most beautiful places in the US but everyone except the asians (the Chinese are very chuddy) living there are insufferably left wing and make it dysfunctional because they don't arrest criminals

Haven't been up to SF in a while but my dad went more recently and told me the streets were disgusting and you wouldn't want to walk in open toed shoes due to the amount of dirty needles and used condoms littering the sidewalk.
