Okay, so no memeing: is this term actually used in your country? I learned of this term through /int/ and in the netherlands no one has ever heard of it. We just know eastern europe and western europe. Do normal, everyday people in your country distinguish "central europe" from eastern europe or not?

yes, Zentraleuropa/Mitteleuropa is a normal term in German and no it's not only used in the context of past German imperialism but as a geographic term too.

Another interesting question:In the netherlands when you say "northern europe" for most people that does not just refer to scandinavia + finland and iceland (like it does here), but rather also include UK, NL, BE, DE, PL etc. and it's mostly used to differentiate from southern europe (meaning mediterranean countries like italy, spain, france, greece, balkan, etc.). Is that the same in other countries?
