do you use linux iyc? should I do it?
If you're unemployed the yea go for it
>>216007060Yeah, I use Ubuntu and Mint for a decade or longer now. Try Mint with the Cinnamon desktop if you're a beginner, it makes it easy to switch from Windows.
>>216007060jewish people using linux, a tale as old as time
>>216007060It's probably easier now that when you have an issue you can just ask Grok or ChatGPT instead of having to interact with the troonix community.
>>216007060I dunno but I'm switching to macos
Yes and yes.Contrary to popular belief, rolling release tends to cause less problems, assuming you really bother learning how the package manager works.
>>216007060>do you use linux iyc?On my t60 for tinkering yes>should I do it?Absolutely no.
>>216007455>>216007405>>216007341I have an nvidia card and do want to game, would that be a problem? I already chose mint as the most likely candidate
>>216007060fedora atomic
>>216007060I've been exclusively using Linux ever since Proton got good. Currently I'm on Arch+i3wm and I no longer ever bother with distro or DE hopping because I believe that I've reached peak computing experience, one that perfectly balances between convenience and control. I'm also unemployed btw if that matters (NEET actually).
>>216007060get bluefin, best distro I've used to far, very user friendly and easy to use, also comes with great security features such as selinux and philosophy of sandboxing. I can agree that most of desktop distros are garbage but bluefin is an exception.
>>216007587Not much of an issue in the past 5 years or so. If gaming is important for you, you definitely want to go with a rolling release distro.
>>216007587some games (current esports slop like pubg/bf6/gta/cod/lol/apex) wont work because they require low level system access only on a windows machine. if you play that shit keep your windows install and just shrink the windows partition and install the other OS alongside it. if you dont play those there's no need to keep windows
>>216007770>if you dont play those there's no need to keep windowsI have good taste so I don't thankfully
>>216007791put ventoy on a USB drivehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7APoZzNPyUmakes it easy to try many different distros/versions of a distro before you choose which one you want
>>216007060It's not worth it unless you have a specific reason. Linux is great if you want to run a home server, for example, but it's kind of a bitch if you just want a normal daily use pc.
>>216008002Not true by the way.
>>216008002this may have been true 10 years ago, these days its the only sane option for a desktop/laptop
I've been thinking about hopping lately as I want more recent packages than what mint has.>>216007737I'm going to try this now.seems interesting.
I switched to arch 4 or 5 months ago. I don't see why you shouldn't. The only argument not to is if you do music production or otherwise need a very specific software. If that's the case you can just dualboot. Also games with kernel level anti-cheats don't work because their devs are faggots (think riot's vanguard etc)
>>216007060I will switch to Linux the day they make it work out of the box without tinkering, and also add native support for any .exe so you don't need a virtual machine to run that shut
>>216007455no one should have to know about package managers to begin with
>Mint this, Ubuntu that, Fedora here, Bluefin over thereI'm happy with the stable release of Debian. I've been using the same thing for a decade and all I have to do is update once end of life is met. Once you have a Debian install configured the way you want it'll just keep working Mint and Ubuntu are downstream of Debian
>>216007060If you enjoy gay sex it's the right choice.
I got used to Linux on my Steam Deck and there are just some ways where it's more convenient than Windows. You don't need a separate program to make specific file formats
>>216007060get it if you hate windows and cant afford a mac
someone just make a Distro that's a carbon copy of Windows and boom: Linux will dominate the worldbut nooretards that like tinkering with their computers like car enthusiasts like going under the hood ruined it for everyone
>>216009271its automated in every distro that comes with a desktop, you just click update or set it to auto update all the software on your pc.>>216009241>and also add native support for any .exe so you don't need a virtual machine to run that shutwine,bottles,winboat... >>216009076 they also have a kde version and a gaming version (aurora and bazzite). i think it's like fedora where you can switch between versions with a single command >>216009454https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQAUFgS657wor zorinOS
>>216007060yeah, I use Linux. it's better than the new windowses for normies
>want to install something on windows>google it>scroll past paid search results>click on site>click no i don't want to accept cookies>click download>open the installer and click yes a bunch of times and tick a bunch of boxesvs>want to install something>type yay -S programname>press y>donevvvghh its so fricken hard winsisters i cant figure it out
>>216009493>you just click update or set it to auto update all the software on your pc.worst decisions imagineable when it comes to any software>wine,bottles,winboat...but those are still opt-in addons you gotta manually go through the trouble of not only setting up, but maintainning
>>216007238I'm super unemployed and I use Windows because you can play bibeo gaym on it
I do, but I don't enjoy "recommending" it to other peoplegive it a go if you want, but it's not windows and it doesn't work like windows. people usually try it while expecting it to be the same, then get frustrated when it isn't and it ends up being a horrible experience for them.get a flash drive and give a few desktop environments a spin. My suggestion for distro? whichever is more popular, like ubuntu or fedora. don't go for esoteric distros or it's going to be hard if you ever need help
>>216009595I don't think distros matter all that much to normies. What they care about is the desktop environment and something like kde plasma is brain dead easy to use.
>>216009539there's chocolatey\winget. i used to work in a place that had a local chocolatey repository but it's trash compared to apt/pacman/dnf>>216009560>worst decisions imagineable when it comes to any softwarewell how would you do it you either want it manual or auto. >>but those are still opt-in addons you gotta manually go through the trouble of not only setting up, but maintainningzorinOS does this out of the boxhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3VDWpLg844
>>216009684>well how would you do it you either want it manual or auto.neversoftware never needs to be updated once it's published, because once it's published it's done and shelved period and that's a hill upon which I will succumbyou NEVER release something that isn't 100% done and never needs to be touched again
>>216009734software is someting that's aliiiiiiive and it evolves maaaaaaaaaan
>>216007060I would if>You don't use industry grade applications like photoshop or anything microsoft>You're only a casual gamer (almost all indie games will work perfectly, but anticheat games will just simply not work)>You like programming and tinkering with software>You only use your PC for simple web browsing, movies and 4chinzAll those reasons are perfect reasons to use Linux and avoid the literal spyware that is Windows 11
>>216007419I'm switching to Mac as well. I do a lot of freelance creative work and Adobe has this entire industry by the balls. If I started sending clients gimp files I'd probably stop getting work.I'm sure it's possible to get Photoshop and shit working on Linux but I'm extremely tech illiterate. Might as well go to the best OS for tech illiterate people. I'm not looking forward to relearning how to navigate the desktop and menus.
>>216009734there's basically no one that has this approach towards software unless it's some tiny utility script. even if you dont add/change features you at least bif bugs and test your program in new environments to see nothing breaks.stuff that never changes and never needs to be touched got that way because it's very simple and has been thoroughly tested by many people over many years (like cat,ls,cp utilities in the terminal)
>>216009796>You only use your PC for simple web browsing, movies and 4chinzThis one is me. I have pretty basic proficiency with linux but it works fine for my basic web browsing and the occasional game. I don't tinker, I don't rice, I just use my computer to do normal shit and have had zero road blocks so far.>>216009830>PhotoshopI just use PhotoGIMP or one of those web-based photoshop clones like Photopea. Davinci Resolve runs on linux so you can use it instead of AE/Premier. In general though I would agree that creative programs are the largest reason to not use linux though. Especially music production.
