If you show an average American or European any piece of northeastern brazilian clothing, music, cuisine or live style they will never guess it's brazilian, and will probably mistake it for colombian or some broad latin (spanish) american thing but never Brazil. No one thinks of the NE abroad when they think of Brazil and most people including other brazilians don't really know anything about this place.

I see this whole "northeast is the image of Brazil" as yet another attempt on blaming us for a non-issue, Brazil as seen from the eyes of the world is Rio + the amazon and it's convenient for those who both dislike such stereotype and dislike us to point the NE as the culprit, also considering they're usually self-centered idiots themselves who do believe every brazilian but "them" fits the negatives of this international stereotype like a glove.
