as carl jung said; just as a person does not forget the pains, fears, and shameful moments of their past but represses them in some way, societies also behave like individuals and bury in their unconscious the wars, invasions, and oppressions they have experienced in the past.these feelings leak from generation to generation into stories, culture, and even jokes.

jung says that europe feared turkish invasions for centuries, and this fear was engraved into europe’s collective memory. the thing he calls the collective unconscious is basically a society’s shared mood, shared past, and shared fears. for example, even though none of the turks experienced the ottoman europe period, the feeling that “the west doesn’t like us” still exists in a large part of the society. even if societies repress their past traumas, one day those repressed feelings will surface. repressed fear will turn into hatred, repressed guilt into excessive nationalism.

on the european side, the repressed fear inherited from the ottoman era now lives as islamophobia, the idea of eastern barbarism, and narratives like “muslim immigrants are taking over europe.” meanwhile, the neo ottoman rhetoric we have is nothing but the other end of the same historical trauma. according to jung, this is where ideologies emerge because people tend to hide their own dark histories. europe, for example, cannot say “we were actually afraid of the turks,” so instead it hides behind “we are civilized, they are barbaric.” the eastern discourse on the other hand, often hides behind an empty pride, saying “we are superior, we will rule again,” instead of admitting “we were humiliated.”

in both cases, people wear the mask of an ideology instead of facing the truth. and this, according to jung, is a dangerous psychological illness. the only way to break this cycle is to see and accept one’s own darkness honestly.

I was trying to say something about the duality of man, sir. The Jungian thing, sir.
