>>216028860I think people have gotten retarded as a species since the 19th century. You have all these Chinese and Japanese pianists who have been studying and practicing the piano all their lives in order to play another guy's pieces, I've heard that some practice for 12 hours a day which is crazy and I doubt Chopin practiced that much. Can any /mu/fag weigh in on this?

>>216029033Many pianists make music as well. That's the reason east asian music is way more diverse and complex than western music. They use more types of chords, progressions and musical mods

>>216029033I think it's all smoke and mirrors and showmanship. These people want to do music for a living. They ultimately want to be marketable when it comes to selling tickets, sell CDs, get good deals with the streaming companies and so on. To that end they have to build up their resume. They sell us on the idea that they have something special and sublime that elevates their music above the many, many, many freely and readily available versions of the same songs. Everything they do, from competing in these competitions, to telling stories about how they practice 14 hours an hour, how they've been playing ever since they developed fingers in utero, and so on... it's all in the service to something like this: https://www.tso.ca/concerts-and-events/events/bruce-liu-plays-rachmaninoff-2 . They want to be a name that you can advertise with, and a face you can put on the brochure. Incidentally on the wikipedia page for this guy it says he became famous for winning this chopin competition. You can also see it when they perform. These guest soloists always wear flashy outfits (I remember there was a spanish violinist in a nice little red dress) and a lot goes into how they behave on stage that has nothing to do with the actual playing. It's an event when someone like this shows up. The audience gives them a standing ovation, they conductor gets off and back onto the stage a few times and then the soloist shows up and gives an encore performance... Live music is definitely a fun experience but I think a significant part of that enjoyment comes from the mystique of supposedly witnessing "world class" musicians and the pomp and ceremony of it all.
