The West, like many of its constituent countries, derives its name from a Roman concept: that is the Roman west, except it doesn't include Roman Africa. If you were in Europe in the 15th century you would have absolutely no doubt about that there was a distinct Occidental civilization in the Latin and Germanic speaking countries quite distinct from its neighbors. I guess you're confused because you don't understand the past and you can't understand culture beyond superficial aspects, and all cultures are now superficially the same.
