You'd be surprised how often "forgetting" the engineering behind something like a material or manufacturing process actually occurs, fogbank is a great example of that

Usually because of lost paperwork, redtape, obscurity in the sense that only a few people know and/or need to know the know behind something or just simply not needing to manufacture for sometime. MS&E and pharmacology is probably the worst offenders when it comes to this
