Between 1864 and 1873, a 28 km2 piece of land within the USA was forgotten by surveyors when they divided the land to form new states. Located at the meeting point between Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, "Lost Dakota" still belonged to the former Dakota Territory, 580 km away from where it sits. It had no known inhabitants, but was infested by bears. It is now part of Montana's Gallatin county, in the Yellowstone national park. Found out about it after watching the show Yellowstone, in which ranchers throw away dead bodies "in a piece of land forgotten by the authorities at the border with Wyoming", I thought it would only be a made up story. Apparently in reality, no sign of illegal activity was ever found there, although technically outlaws could go and hide from authorities which had no jurisdiction in this piece of land. Imagine having so much land that you end up forgetting about its existence. I find this anecdote fascinating. Do you have any similar examples somewhere else?
