Does anyone know a better way to make a map of Croatian towns and villages in Western Slavonia showing the ethnic Serbian percentage from the 1991 census?
I did pic related by cropping Google Maps screenshots but it's a lot of work and looks like shit.

have you tried asking this clanker?

Hadn't heard of it. Tried and got this crap.

There are cartography softwares allowing you to do all sorts of things, free of charge but demanding a bit of skills. Try QGis or another.
Then once you've found your software you'll need raw data (usually XML iirc), that you should be able to find on government websites.
Input that shit and generate. I learned to do that in grad school for all sorts of data and purposes, but I wasn't really interested in the matter and our training was really subpar. I couldn't help you personally, but you could find tutorials online.
Just don't do it with Paint man, make an effort.

I don't really know what you mean regarding raw data and XML, but I'm downloading QGis.
>Just don't do it with Paint man, make an effort.
I mean, this is only for my personal viewing to visualize my research. If QGis takes more effort than cropping Paint, I'll crop Paint instead.

Takes mental effort more than manual labour, but since you're doing research you could take a liking to it. It's not rocket science. I don't know what level you're trying to reach in you research but QGis provides standardised cartography used officially.
...
So I looked online for the data you're using and it comes from a book. I'm sure you'll be able to form vectors on QGis but you'll have to input the numerical data by hand. If you're serious about your research you could also create the data file yourself but I have no idea how to do that.

The advantage of a cartography software, especially a vectorial like QGis, is you can have an organic structure to your map unlike fucking cropping screenshots. With QGis you'll be able to zoom in and out, and move the map, and of course assign data to your vectors, etc. like a 4D piece of information instead of a 2D picture.

Thank you for your advice. How did you determine the data I'd be using comes from a book? Are you referring to this? https://mzozt.gov.hr/UserDocsImages/UPRAVA-ZA-PROCJENU-UTJECAJA-NA-OKOLIS-ODRZIVO-GOSPODARENJE-OTPADOM/Opuo/OPUO_2025/25_03_2025_Elaborat_SE_Oku%C4%8Dani.pdf
QGis activated two Trojan alerts from Windows Defender, by the way.
I ended up just doing pic related for now since I was just looking for a basic visual aid in research.

Looked for it online bro. "1991 Croatia census data" came back with many databases only referencing a book that compiles census data from the 19thh century up to 1991.
>QGis activated two Trojan alerts from Windows Defender
Happens with some opensource software. If you downloaded from the official site (qgis dot org) you can ignore the alerts. I never had problems with it. Tried downloading and I see it's an MSI file which demands access to your Windows system files. Never download from 3rd party sources of course since it's opensource and an MSI, if you're confident in the source you can install no problem. Trojan alerts happen on some softwares with the new Windows versions, Microsoft is becoming shittier and shittier.

There was Google service called MyMaps that would do basically the same job as QGis only dumbed down a lot, but I also liked it for how convenient it was.
