American males look like this according to Japan.
They only knew how to draw asians so their attempt to draw a westerner is weird
>>216285753I do look exactly like that though.
>>216285858I've seen what their drawings of asians looked like, they didn't know how to draw them either.

Japanese painters that only heard of westerners sometimes got confused when they heard they had "blue eyes" and would paint them with brown pupils and blue sclera.
>>216288482This is actually pretty interestingIt shows how closed japan really was
>>216285753so this is what does it for japanese ladies then?
Their depiction of Commodore Perry is about the same.
>>216288507I can't find it but some of the paintings depict the blue sclera as more pronounced too.
>>216288528Shut up

>>216288482They knew what Europeans looked like, they had constant contact with the Dutch and their scholars/bureaucrats would meet with physicians shipped from places like Germany because they were interested in what they called Dutch studies. The Japanese knew what they looked like the Dutch would constantly do business with their merchants, they lived in Dejima.
>>216288622Yeah but they only were allowed in like one port. Most Japanese would have never met one in person and only heard stories.
>>216288657Like 85% of Japan were peasants at the time, the upper castes knew of them.
>>216288918>of
>>216288918not every single person in the upper castes would have seen a white person with their very own eyes
>>216288918Hardly anyone met foreigners except for people who did just that in Nagasaki or whatever. They didn’t have artists who would sit and study how Europeans looked like. To be fair, European artists were pretty bad at one point too but they improved a lot since the 13th century. In Japan the innovation was limited and the vast majority of people never seen anyone from abroad. And let’s be frank, it’s not like many Japanese people nowadays have the “fortune” of ever meeting someone born outside of Japan.

>>216289047>And let’s be frank, it’s not like many Japanese people nowadays have the “fortune” of ever meeting someone born outside of Japan.Japan gets like 40 million inbound tourism and they have Youtube/Twitter/TV they can see the rest of the world just as well as anyone else. How do people think they're still insular? It's one of the top tourist destinations globally and they learn about western art/history in their schools. They have a higher chance of meeting a foreigner than I do just because of how many people visit Japan, hell even in the 90s they had a higher chance of doing so. Oscar Wilde was right to say that the whole of Japan is an invention, because I swear everyone has their own special hallucination when it comes to this country when it's just like anywhere else.
>>216285858Pretty much itPainting is from XVIII century
>>216296512you really look like sarmatians in this one
