Are European cultures + Japan the only countries on earth where calling non-kin "brothers" is a real taboo? I remember being pissed off whenever I went outside of Europe and people started calling me "brother" until I realised that they weren't trying to scam me.
That's because non-European cultures are still extremely tribal.

Using familial terms, including brother, for people outside your family is a normal part of Japanese culture. You also call other peoples mom "mom" and stuff like that
