>One of those Dean befriended was German engineer Heinz Schlicke, who developed infrared fuses that could be used to trigger an atomic bomb.

So wait, did American mass media admit that they got the nukes from Nazi Germany... ?
I mean this guy developed fuses for nukes which are obviously no good without nukes in the first place and he was on this sub which brought secret weapons and uranium (!) to the US shortly after the war ended.

Crazy how the only reason we weren't on the Nazi's side was because they spoke German and not English.
I'm going to right that wrong.

Nah I believe the reasons are basically this:
After WW1 Europe was wrecked, Germany lost its status as continental Europe's leading power and Britain was dealt a hefty blow despite being the winner, France was a shadow of its former self ever since the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
This power vacuum enabled the US to become enormously powerful.
With Germany on the rise again the US wanted to prevent this rival from elevating Europe to its former role in the world, perhaps even surpassing that.
In US propaganda of the time it isn't so much about the ideological differences, rather it simply is about power on the world stage.
