>Rising at a steady two-percent grade, the track gains 77 feet (23 m) in elevation and makes a 1,210-foot-diameter (370 m) circle.

what a joke
>>
>>216471310
why not go in a straight line???
>>
>>216471592
old steam engines with a heavy load probably needed that?
>>
>>216471592
probably saved a lot of cost somewhere else along the track

looks neat but why not just go like this, did it have a reason to be like that?
>>
>>216471622
because the train is following a valley floor, they don't have anywhere to put a straight line
>>
>>216471658
a train can't go up a steep slope like that. you want to give it more travel distance to climb. same reason they build those serpentine roads in the mountains, except trains can't turn very sharp corners so you have to get creative
>>
>>216471658
It's hard to tell from the angle, but I assume the issue is elevation.
To go in a line they'd need to make a really long ditch, which would have problems with rains, slides and so on.

Railroads require excellent maths skills and preferably slave labour.
Name one other people on the planet who fit that requirement better than the Chinese?
>>
>>216471911
I'd say Indians but I've seen the live leaks

Imagine being an american freight train driver, seems like a comfy job

Imagine what America could look like today if it wasn't for the Chinese Exclusion Act. Shit, WW2 probably doesn't even happen in that world.
>>
>>216471310
erm actually it's Black not black
>>
I'd actually kill myself if I lived in a city with an active railroad. every fucking couple hours *ding ding ding* and a loud fucking train horn, nope
>>
>>216471310
imagine 10 billion pajeets riding on the roof tho
>>
>>216474157
I live right next to the train tracks, when I was WFH that part sucked
at least there is some noise regulation for them not to blow their horn after like 9 pm though
>>
>>216472026
It actually really isn’t too bad. Plus if you can score just an MTA conductor (ticket person) job, they actually pay you great money with great benefits. The train system here isn’t great because it’s not big and doesn’t have a lot of amenities, but as a worker it still has a lot of the protections from the late 1800s and early 1900s steam locomotive legislature, plus whatever laws were added since then.
Anyway though trains in the US are dope but AVOID THE SUBWAYS

best freight rail system in the world
it's only our passenger lines that are bad
>>
>>216471658
nah I'm sure they just did it because it looked cool, no other reason
If only you had been there to tell them...
>>
>>216472026
when I was in naples all the train drivers were teenage girls, and our train got lost and had to back up when it almost hit another train. And, nobody checked my ticket for the entire week I was there

honestly I'd rather be around hot, young women than freezing my ass off with overweight mexicans

>train got lost
how did they manage that
>>
>>216474871
there's 2 train stations in pompeii and she didn't stop and wait, also none of the signals work and half the stations are abandoned so she just drove it to the nearest town and there was already a train there

it worked out though since they sent another driver in a taxi who reset the computer and fixed it
>>
>>216475036
well the train didn't get lost did it, they knew where it was

but how do you miss the pompeii station it's really obvious, a red building with "pompeii" on it that is right next to the tracks?! then again, naples is a shithole
>>
>>216475036
I didn't make it to my assigned station but there was another train to pick me up since northbound trains into naples all converge. This was when I started to notice all the garbage everywhere since I had to wait half an hour for the computer guy to wake up and let the trains stop.
>>
>>216475064
There's like two or three "pompei" stations and trenitalia does not serve any of them. I only realized this later since I took a connecting flight into naples, not the train. Also the regional trains do not take credit cards, although again they don't check tickets in the first place either.
>>
>>216471658
niggas dumb af
>>
>>216475108
>the regional trains do not take credit cards
EAV has a ticket booth where you can buy both tickets for both their circumvesuviana train and pompeii itself, it's right next to the track you're supposed to take

yeah there's a bunch of stations in that vicinity but only one is for the actual tourist destination

but if you took trenitalia you probably went on a different set of tracks entirely

Thousands of brazilians died building railways through hills and jungles in the late 1800's just so car obsessed governments could abandon all that infrastructure in the 1950's then sell it for pennies in the 1990's
