It is a documented historical fact that members of the early American elite, such as the Astor, Forbes, Roosevelt and Delano families, built their significant fortunes through the illegal opium trade with China in the 19th century.

Astor: John Jacob Astor, America's first multi-millionaire, made part of his fortune by shipping opium to Canton, China, in the early 19th century, despite the Chinese government having banned the drug.
Forbes: The Forbes family, part of the Boston Brahmin elite, were heavily involved in the China trade through firms like Perkins & Co. and Russell & Co.. Family members like Robert Bennet Forbes and John Murray Forbes orchestrated and profited from the opium trade, with these profits helping to build American industry and infrastructure, including railroads and philanthropic institutions.
Delano: Warren Delano Jr., the maternal grandfather of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), was the head partner of the largest American firm in the China trade, Russell & Co., which dealt extensively in opium. He made a large fortune in the trade, lost much of it in the Panic of 1857, and returned to the trade to quickly rebuild his wealth. FDR's mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, grew up partly in China as a result of her father's business there.

Yeah, a lot of America's leading families piggybacked on the Opium War stuff so they could get money for railroads and real estate acquisition in the US. It was a smart move. Who gives a shit?
