W makes a /v/ sound in most languages due to sound changes.
Its original pronunciation was the voiced labial-velar approximant. It was created due to how the Latin script no longer had a letter for the /w/ sound because of how V underwent the same phonetic process (V and U were the same letter, with V used before a vowel to show that it was pronounced as a semi-vowel), and several languages which initially used this letter later went through the same phonological process of /w/ turning into /v/, although Polish evolved /w/ back through a different sound, the velarized lateral approximant /ɫ/ becoming /w/.
