Lisbon, Valladolid and Sevilla were the main economic centers of Europe during late XV and XVI century through the Portuguese trade in slaves, spices, silk, gold, silver and American products, and the buying/selling of Spanish monarchy bonds by Genoese, German, Portuguese and Flemish bankers in exchange of loans to the Habsbourgs. Cervantes and other authors of the time pointed out that cities like Seville were full of black slave plantations.

lisbon was about 10% black in the 16th and 17th century

It is funny that authorities preferred to bring black slaves instead of European ones but did not hesitated to send some enslaved Galicians to work in sugar plantations in the Caribbean.
