Unrelated question, why is Egypt such a shithole these days? They weren't envolved in any major wars recently as far as I know.
although from what i've read sudanese and egyptian arabs aren't as close as we might think. they were arabized in different ways with egypt coming under the sway of arabs very early on in the 7th century whereas the arab armies crashed against the walls of dongola and were unable to conquer the christian state of makuria with which they eventually negotiated a treaty which allowed christians to freely transit through muslim egypt and vice versa. makuria was also something of a protector of christianity and once invaded muslim egypt to save the coptic patriarch of alexandria.eventually, though both makuria and alodia (another nubian christian state further south with its capital near modern day kharoum) collapsed in the middle ages perhaps due to plague and arab bedouin tribes started to move in from egypt and saudi and settling the deserts and the nile valley and beginning the arabization of sudan hundreds of years after it had started in egypt.another fun fact: sudan is the only part of the arab world that was arabized in which the previous majority language was completely unrelated to afro-asiatic (berber, egyptian and aramaic are all related to arabic)
