But to many of the men I meet who have these complaints, shedding the conservative mindset is largely about shedding the taboos around premarital sex, drinking alcohol, eating meat, and partying. When it comes to misogyny, you'll see little difference between them and a village patriarch. You can expect the same gross sexist comments and outlooks on women. They'll be grossed out by gay people and are still overly concerned about displaying their masculinity. Many haven't let go of casteist attitudes and slurs, and will readily say racist things about Africans and east Asians.Basically, when they complain about their family being conservative/traditional, it's entirely about how indulging in pleasures is frowned upon – about how things that you can enjoy are restricted, not about how they view women and people different from them.Now I personally drink alcohol occasionally (not a big fan usually) and have lived with a partner without marrying her. I don't eat meat for ethical reasons but don't hold any religious prejudice against it (I'm not religious). But these are not the hallmarks of my progressivism.
