>>216622512>Why?Chinese country names are mostly phonetic, but by virtue of their writing system they have to use existing words to give a phonetic rendering. And to avoid insult, for (country) names, they usually make sure to choose a character that has a positive meaning. Mei guo is the closest approximation of "america" that chinese allows for (or at least the one that prevailed in history) and they picked an interpretation of "mei" that is not derogatory. The same happens for other countries. England is rendered as "heroic country" for the same reasons etc.
