Gather a broad yet depthful knowledge of every state in your country, when they came to existence, when they were settled, what are the culture of their people, what has happened in those states and so on.Once you're done actually amassing both useful and trivial knowledges about your country, then pick a country/continent/era and begin to study that too.
Do you mean something specific by intellectual? Like academic knowledge or? There's pretty few real life instances where you need to be versed in old literature or stuff like that, or math and physics

You don't need to be a mega expert in a thing, but even if you know a little bit about it, you might be able to apply it to something else as well.
