malays were bottom tier economically because chinese and indians were imported by the british to do all the work and malaysia wanted policies that favoured malays "to catch up", but singapore is majority chinese and obviously didnt want that.
i think the "kicked out" bit is overstated/mostly made up because it makes a better story afterwards, they both cooked it up and mutually agreed rather than just being kicked out

We didn't. It was a mutual divorce. Singapore was lumped together with Malaya when the Brits gave us independence. The reason being it is easier to defend as one country, as proven by the following war with Indonesia and the communist rebellion. Thing is, Malaya at the time already had a Chinese political party, the KMT-led MCA, which allied with the Malay UMNO and Indian MIC. Singapore had their own Chinese PAP and Kuan Yew wanted his party to replace the MCA. In addition, the addition of Singaporean Chinese to Malaya imbalanced the racial equation and threatened the Malay majority. So, the solution was to include Bornean Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei into a new country called Malaysia to balance out the Chinese with native peoples. Hence, Malaysia actually has 2 Independence Days (Merdeka and Malaysia Day). After getting into Malaysia but being denied political supremacy as the Chinese party, Kuan Yew decided to leave Malaysia. We were more than happy as the racial situation was still dicey. So both sides agreed that a divorce is mutually beneficial. But then, many Singaporeans, especially the Malays there would be very unhappy, so Kuan Yew did his thing and spun the origin-story that they were forced out so no takesies backsies. Despite what people online like to say, Malaysia and Singapore have a cordial relationship since day 1. We even sorted any territorial disputes via the ICJ and have good economic and cultural links with each other.
