America tries to invade Canada
>fails miserably several times
America goes to war with Mexico
>succeeds and grabs their clay
Is it because we're whiter than them?

Canada was protected by Britain, Mexico fought America 1 on 1.

Not well versed in Canadian history but you can't understand our defeat without at least going back to the XVIIIth century, with the Borbon reforms and the disastrous consequences for New Spain. Basically it goes like this

1) Spain losses Naples. Peru is dried up. So Spain decides to over-tax New Spain in order to finance their wars & army, leaving us completely broke.

2) Borbonic reforms also undermines New Spain's autonomy, which means the Vicerroy can no longer look after the well being of the Kingdom. This translates to neglecting New Mexico, Texas & California (they were third rate poverty-stricken provices at that time)

3) Mexico achieves independence, which is not recognized by Spain, leaving Mexico in a state of legal uncertainty (no european nation wants to trade with us, except Britain, that would later explain why Mexico didn't industrialize in the XIXth century).

4) Spain continues to block our main port in Veracruz (they still had Cuba at this point) so trade becomes almost impossible.

5) The dire economical situation leads to internal instability. Mexican elites concentrate on defending their property instead of creating a proper a nation-state.

6) The situation in the north continues unchanged, new mexicans, tejanos & californios are constantly harrased and massacred by Comanches.

All these are the historical conditions that must be taken into account when considering the Mexican-American war and its outcome.

Mexican areas north of rio Grande weren't even inhabited by mexicans like ones who exist today but by indian tribesmen, indian serfs and occassional castizo landowners. White Americans would flood that territories no matter what happened

Except they weren't. Canada had almost no help in 1812 war because Britain had another war in another continent. You would no if you were real British
