How do Japanese people index kanji in their headWhen I see e.g. 長 I think "long" because that's the keyword I learned to associate it with while learning, do Japanese think of the sound なが because they also think of "long" in Japanese? Or do they think of the on or kun reading? Or the general abstract idea of something being long?

Since kanji usually appear as part of words, it's not very common to look at a single kanji character and think about something on it. However, for example, if I see a single character 長 in the comment section of a video website, I'd imagine it means "this video is long." If I see a single character "長" in an advertisement for a cord, cable, or hose, I'd imagine it's conveying the message "this product is long."
