>McClintock was homeless and a heroin addict in London. But in 2018 everything changed. That’s when he met Ulrika Hansson Blomkvist by chance. He now lives in Sweden and works at the Skälby 4H farm in Kalmar, and their journey has become a book about his transformation.
>The day 42-year-old James McClintock met Ulrika Hansson Blomkvist, he was a heavy heroin user and sleeping on the streets of London. He had infected wounds on his body and blood poisoning.
>Ulrika, who lives part-time in a small apartment in London, offered him her help. James, who had nothing to lose, gratefully accepted the offer.
>– He looked like he was dead. We took him to the doctor, and the doctor said he only had two weeks to live, says Ulrika Hansson Blomkvist.
>For six months after receiving medical assistance, Ulrika visited him every day on the street. Sometimes she also slept over on the street with him so that he would have company. In 2019, Ulrika and her husband decided that James would be allowed to move into their apartment, where they lived together – on 23 square meters – for a year.
>During that year, James managed to step down and finally become completely free of drugs, and plans for a move to Sweden took shape.
>In 2020 – after a lot of paperwork – James moved to Läckeby in Kalmar.
>Today, James works at Skälby 4H farm in Kalmar, and has his own cabin on the farm where Ulrika and her husband live.
>Ulrika has previously raised money for James so that he could stay in Sweden, and now she says that she has gained “a friend for life”.
>– James as a person is incredibly grateful for things in life. He lives here and now, he really sees the little things that the rest of us miss. The other day we got a hedgehog in the garden, and he was overjoyed that he could go and give the hedgehog some water, says Ulrika Hansson Blomkvist.
