tastes like most other fermented and salty things, fermented and salty.
somewhat similar to some stinky cheeses, i guess and just like a very pungent cheese, you eat it with other stuff. the usual way people eat it is with tomatoes, onions, potatoes, and sourcream (often rolled into a piece of bread, like a stinky taco)

i don't hate it but i don't love it either, won't say no if someone invites me to have it

Throughout Japan, pickled squid is more common.
Salmon pickles are popular these days.

Not really, Sea Bass has a firmer texture and has more of a salt ware fish taste although it's mild and kind of "sweet" it's one of my favorite fish - you should try it.

I think it's called this in Swedish
>>
>>216919008
I read a letter from 18th century USA where some American was complaining about the smell of Swedish immigrants. He said having to stand near them was torture because they smelled like shit
>>
>>216918844
and it doesn't help that a lot of people doing the "challenge" eat it as is, with bones and all and without anything to dampen the very strong flavor
>>
>>216918844
I think the reason for the smell is that they keep the traditional manufacturing method.
Japan used to make it the same way as Sweden, but since refrigerators and freezers became popular, the production method has changed and it became easier to eat.

Originally, it was fermented strongly in the same way, but now it is stopped at a weak fermentation of about 20 days to suppress the smell.
Occasionally, there is herring made by traditional method, but like surströmming, it is liquid, smelly and very salty.
>>
>>216919060
>I think it's called this in Swedish
yes it is
most of the fish i eat is caught by me so i've never had the opportunity to fish for it since i neither live on the west coast nor have a boat but i might buy some based on your recommendation. do you just fry it as is or with some sort of breading?
>>
>>216917497
it is that bad, and if you dont let it air out for an hour or two, the smell becomes the taste. and its sad because the taste of fermented fish is heavenly. no natural dish taste better than it.

>>

pickled herring isn't fermented at all. it's basically just fish in a jar of "pickle juice" (the acidic kind)
surströmming is fermented in brine
hope that clears it up

I fry the fresh water bass. Sea Bass is best grilled and pan seared in butter or olive oil. But also good in the oven with some olive oil and white wine. I only bread white fish like cod and haddock which are mild in taste.

But....lately I've been doing this thing with Sea Bream (picrel). I dry it out with a towel, lightly brush it with olive oil and coat it in Panko bread crumbs - then lightly fry it in a thin layer of butter and a little bit of olive oil on a low heat (so the butter doesen't burn. 7-8 mins on each side). I do some vertical cuts in the skin so the butter can penetrate and it also cooks faster. This will also apply to Sea Bass because the meat is very similar.
>>
>>216918184
Barely anyone eats surströmming anymore. It's a traditional regional dish. It's kept alive amongst young people basically entirely through the memes. Mostly in regions of the cunt that never ate it in the first place. He's right. You're supposed to open it in a barrell of water to trap the gas from fermentation.

The feature of Japanese herring pickles is to put fermented rice to promote fermentation.
Cut the fresh herring, add salt and fermented rice, mix, and keep in the refrigerator for about 20 days.
Store in the freezer to prevent further fermentation.
The traditional method is to ferment in the shade in wooden barrels.

In Japan, natural yeast of rice is common. In some regions, barley is used.
Rice yeast has milder aroma and taste and is sweeter.
>>
>>216919947
It's a similar food, so I think you can eat it without feeling uncomfortable.
However, the amount of salt and rice and the quality of herring itself vary depending on the maker, so the taste varies greatly.
For example, there is a big difference between roe-bearing herring and non-roe-bearing herring.

I think there will be new business opportunities in Sweden if they make and sell new surströmming while keeping the traditional manufacturing method.
