The first time I ever really realized there were different plug types in different countries was in college, when an Arab exchange student come out into the dorm lobby looking baffled with some cords. I took him to the local Walmart and helped him get some converters. We also stopped at AT&T and I basically had to translate for him to get a local mobile plan. When it came time to sort through the prices, the employee and I were both clearly wondering if this was a rich Saudi guy, but no, he got the cheapest plan. I only ever saw him once afterwards, and we smiled and waved.
