But a certain kind of low class person doesn't view this as generosity, but part of their paycheck (you can partially blame their employer, but they did sign up to work for whatever an hour, so it's not like they're entitled to anything either) so they'll go off on you. If you frequent the restaurant, expect to be treated poorly and perhaps not even seated at all.
