When the Indian National Congress was established, the British wittingly exploited religion as a way to fracture the pan-Indian anti-colonial movement, sometimes rewarding the muslim landowners for being loyal subjects of the British Raj and propping up the Muslim League to weaken the INC, knowing that many muslims didn't want to live in a country controlled by hindus. In some instances the Muslim League sided with the British. Then there was the creation of Pakistan and the wars.

Pashtuns (Afghans) are found to the northwest, they are also Iranian muslims, they neighbour the Kashmiris in the north east, they are Indians who are mostly muslim but more mutted with Iranians than Punjabis. Finally you can find ethnically Tibetan muslims to the far north, in a region called Baltistan
