Is it true that if you haven't learned a second language by a certain age your brain loses the ability to? Am I cursed to forever be a monolingualet?
>>
No you don't lose the ability to learn and remember.
But when you become an adult the amount of time you have to study languages decreases. Learning language is all about immersion so you won't be able to learn as effectively if you can only spare 1-2 hour a day to study a language

You still can, but there's something related to brain elasticity that makes it harder to learn as you get older. The same goes for learning how to play piano and other stuff.

your mind hardens like clay into old age if you don't challenge it every single day

Brain plasticity*
I've never used the term in English so I just guessed.

Learning new things can increase neuroplasticity as well. I know people in their 80s and 90s who are still very sharp because they spent mental energy on new things. In fact, one of my friends in her 80s started learning spanish a few years ago through community classes and she’s really good. Well, her accent sucks. But her grammar and vocab are great.

There are two factors:

- the older you get, the harder you learn because memory doesn't stick so fast
- certain people are better at learning foreign languages, as it takes vocal mimicry abilities, which vary a lot in a population (hence why native accent is so rare among non-native learners)

the problem is you'll be too lazy to stick it out when you are older because of jobs and other committments. There's also the fact that learning a second language does nothing tanglble for you so there's less motivation to learn it all the way through.

I am unc status. Is it too late for me?

At what age is unc status granted?

just take shrooms to enhance elasticity

that's also why boomers they get so much alzheimers, millenials and gen z are instead gonna suffer schizophrenia

When it's your time you just know.

>Vocal mimicry ability
I have this, my accent has been complimented by Australian, British and American tourists
I also started Chinese lessons recently and the teach said I had the best pronunciation, even if my overall knowledge wasn't great
