multi-story commercial buildings with vertical neon advertisements are the reason why tokyo looks the way it does. in new york city the other floors are often used for offices

Perhaps it's not do to with admiring the aesthetics of the place but rather the people who live there

Shibuya Ward has a population of over 200,000. It's a real place where people go about their lives. The same thing can be said about Midtown Manhattan and London's West End but one thing's for sure. You don't have to worry about getting mugged by some desperate unemployed druggie in the middle of Tokyo
>>
>>217178809
Definitely not, even as someone in the US it's cheaper to go to Japan and tour around than it is in New York if I plan on buying things and going to restaurants extremely frequently. No one goes touring for people unless it's sex tourism otherwise that's some bizarre way of looking at tourism like you're going through a human nature preserve. I know people do this for pacific islanders but most people go to Japan to see the cities and shrines.

> I know people do this for pacific islanders but
You realize is cheaper now to go make sex tourism in japan than in thailand right? it has been going on for a while
>>
>>217179726
People don't do sex tourism in Pacific Islands, they go there to see haka dances and festivals. Japan isn't a major destination for sex tourism, at least not with normal people it's a major tourism hub that's also dirt cheap. They had this reputation prior to the 90s then did damage control on that reputation after Showa ended.
>>
>>217178608
Makes sense to have offices or residential apartments in levels above the ground floor. But maybe the Japanese really like retail shopping so they have to cram in more shops in the city center.

I've never heard of it. It would be like doing sex tourism in Amsterdam or Germany I imagine. They have brothels there, but it's regulated to the point of being undesirable. SEA it's in your face all the time, sexpats are not nuanced people they don't want rules they just want quick access.
>>
>>217179980
I think major difference between japland and Thailand is that in thailand you have to pay for the sex while in japland you get it for free (whites only).

Bruh they literally have dozens of prostitutes in the streets, so unlike those countries is either brothel or picking up a girl from the streets.

as someone who has been to all three:

Times Square:
>reeks of weed
>has street performers everywhere
>is pretty nice during the holiday season
>has lots of cheap food options
>is usually just somewhere to aimlessly walk around while on a layover at the Port Authority bus terminal
Shibuya Crossing:
>is under perpetual construction as-of late
>has obnoxious people sprinting to record IG reels and TikToks of them dancing in the middle the instant the light turns green to cross
>the crowds vanish as soon as you walk a few blocks away into the residential areas.
>looks the best at night out of the three, but the worst during the day out of the three
>is a cheat code for interesting street photography because of the current "thing: Japan" mania
Piccadilly Circus:
>it's quaint i guess.

much like everything else in life, all three were probably more interesting to see 20 years ago.

By % Americans consume about as much anime as Japanese. Per capita that means they double the Japanese market and none of this is even accounting for Europe,South America, India, or the Arabic world.

This is one of the most soulless places in Japan its nothing but tourists sprinting out to the middle to take pictures. There was a starbucks or something across from it like 3 stories up and I saw a massive crowd of people at the window soyfacing and taking pictures of people walking across it.
