Malaysia categorize all brown SEA islander, no matter how different or far they are from the peninsula, as "Malays"
This is like UK categorize all white European like Danish, French, and Serbian pipo as "English"

both "nation" are not real anyway, so this pan-malay things works as intent

Both are ass
One larps something that they aren't, while the other larps something that never happened

This. There was a clear difference in the level of civilization between Thailand and Malaysia. Thailand was already civilized kingdom so Brits tried to negotiate with them, but Malays were obviously jungle monkeys so they didn't even consider to talk with them, just conquered and colonized.

They're both wrong and here's why.

Malaysia's definition falsely conflates the smaller Malay ethnicity/nation with the greater Malayo-Polynesian race.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian "nation" is a total construct (read Benedict Anderson) and isn't based on anthropological reality whatsoever, and instead used to mask the state's imperial ambitions to unite its diverse peoples.

He meant to say "imagine if the UK did that."

Lots of countries are like this. Even some European countries do it.
