Every still-used writing system except for Chinese characters and Japanese kana is derived ultimately (at various levels of indirectness) from Egyptian hieroglyphs via the Phoenician alphabet. (Writing has only been invented independently three or four times.) In the case of Latin script the chain runs via Greek and Etruscan.
