now that I wrote that, an old acquintance of mine came to mind. we'd frequent the same gyms and got along great for years, I'd visit his graduation and a couple of birthdays. he was quite the outwardly, banter type of guy. but over time it felt like his banter became douchey. I'd eventually start giving equally douchey banter back, but it's like he secretly got offended such that he'd start getting more toxic back. then one day he had decided to take part in municipal elections, and overnight he'd be talking all soft and diplomatically. my final impressions of him at the end of the day were that inside he was a self-centered douchebag, and I do sometimes wonder how many people who end up in politics are like that
