DJT is a language learning thread for those studying the Japanese language.
Japanese speakers learning English are welcome, too.

Read the guide linked below before asking how to learn Japanese:

I've seen some posts saying Japanese poster's English is stiff. Is that true?
I am somewhat aware of itself. I don't know how to use expressions not found in textbooks.

Hello, I am planning my first travel to Japan in the next few months. I have read the language guide but it seems very comprehensive. Can anyone recommend a guide for some very basic things to help a tourist get by? Things like basic greetings and directions that I could learn within a few weeks.
Also, is there anywhere I can read up on basic customs to know for travel? I'm worried I might miss things and cause offense. For example, I am a smoker. In Australia we are banned from smoking indoors, but it's very common to smoke on streets and in outdoor crowds which I understand is illegal in Japan. I have learned some other things from anime/games, eg shoes off indoors and be quiet on the train. I have dreamed of traveling to Japan for many years and want to ensure that I'm not causing any problems or offense for locals.

Is it recommended to not use translated media for learning? I was gonna play Hogwarts Legacy in Japanese but saw a post saying that the translation is not great, so I'm wondering if it would do more harm than good.

I don't think playing action games can work as study material. I think your time should be best spent consuming content in general (anime, novels, news articles, podcasts, vtubers) or playing エロゲ.
Also I think it's fine to watch translated stuff.

in japanese you describe something with an adjective to express your feelings about it, while in english we normally use a verb

like, we say "I hate vegetables" (vegetables is the object of the verb)
but in japanese you say 野菜が嫌いだ (野菜 is the subject of an adjective)

or "I like ice cream" (ice cream is object)
but アイスが好きだ (ice cream is the subject)

those are the classic examples where everyone learns "lol japanese is so weird"
but actually it's the same with all kinds of feelings

like "I'm scared of spiders" (spiders is in a complement position or whatever, and we say "I am scared," as if it's an action we're doing)
but in japanese 蜘蛛が怖い (describing 蜘蛛 with an adjective 怖い)

or "I miss home" ("miss" is a verb that we do and "home" is the object)
but in japanese お家が恋しい (describe 家 with an adjective)

心配だ is another feeling adjective
君のことが心配だ "I'm worried about you” (describe 君のこと with the adjective 心配)

My theory is that English's preference for describing emotions towards things through stative verbs and Japanese's preference for describing them through adjectives comes from the subject-prominance and topic-prominance of those langauges

In English, all verbs are thought of as having a subject, a noun or phrase that is tied to the verb, and is either doing the verb, or is the reciever of a verb in passive constructions. ("The bird flies", "The cat runs", "The fish swims". "Flies", "Runs", "Swims" are all considered grammatically incomplete in english). You can see the extreme of this in dummy pronouns, like in the phrase "It rained". ("Rained" describes an action that occured but not necessarily done by anything. Still, it needs the "it" to make it grammatically complete, even if "it" refers to nothing at all).

Meanwhile, Japanese verbs describe actions that just happen, not actions that are being done. 逃げる translates to "(I/she/he/it) runs" and is fully grammatically correct. Any clarifying addition to the sentence is a topic related to a verb, not an explicit subject (私は走る, "For me, (I) run", 今日は走る, "Tomorrow, (I/she/he/it) will run", マラソンは走る, "(At) the Marathon, (I/she,he,it) will run).
Even though particle が is sometimes called the "subject" particle and does seem to imply a subject in certain idiomatic constructions.

So considering English verbs describe "doing" things and Japanese verbs describe "happening" things, its natural that English describes emotional states as stative verbs being performed by an agent (liking, worrying, hating, missing) which isn't as natural of a conclusion as in Japanese. Hence why Japanese defaults to describing emotions by painting outside objects with adjectives

お父さんが心配
My father is a concern
アイスが好きだ
Ice cream is something liked
お家が恋しい
My home is something missed
>>
is みたいな感じ the japanese equivalent to saying 'like' all the time and putting it in every sentence?
