Large, sedentary societies are patriarchal because centralization of power and specialization is suddenly made possible. With large populations and powerful institutions it's possible to have large sections of the population be confined to the home and still keep things running. The north is matriarchal because they was vikings, the south (to the extent that they are, which I think you're exaggerating) because they're poor and undeveloped
