Why is this called neko in japan but maoo in china? Why did japanese start saying neko?

simply this. /neko/ is the pure Japanese word for a cat.

as a word component, we also have /bjo/, which was borrowed from an old form of /mao/.
but it doesn't appear independently in our language.
