Older Japanese anime tended to have plenty of Freemason references and was way more into schizo occultist. This was before the otaku takeover of anime where professionals/film buffs would direct anime and people actually had varied art styles. Then in the 90s a major censorship outbreak happened due to a serial killer and all of the old creatives were washed out for the new wave of sanitized anime, ironically otaku culture started out as primarily being associated with porn, but they produced cutesy bullshit and safe power fantasies so the incredibly centralized Japanese media establishment championed them to lead their media industries. Hayao Miyazaki bitches about this often he hates otaku.

There is plenty of hyper masculine characters if you look at shounen anime about fights and shit.
There was plenty of weak, plain teenager-type characters back then if you looked at romance or slice of life.
