Study of indigenous legends and Japanese tsunami records in the 90s confirmed that it is an active tectonic area and that earthquakes are big, but rare. Few buildings are reinforced for earthquakes. We are overdue for the next big one and the tsunami is expected to kill everyone on the coast proper. Portland, Seattle and Vancouver are inland enough to survive the tsunami, but will be heavily destroyed by the quake itself.
