>>217661658No big celebrations, not since I was a child—I don’t enjoy parties or want gifts. It’s most often just a low-key day with my wife and kids. I choose the day’s menu unilaterally, and any activities, and try to avoid household responsibilities.Last year, I ate ice cream and went for a swim in the Rhine (was living in CH until recently). It was a nice day. This year I got quietly shitfaced by myself, drinking all day while my family wasn’t looking, which was a regrettable choice (I have a severe drinking problem and have been abstaining from alcohol more often than not for years; this was one in a long series of sloppy relapses). My wife was distraught and furious, my children embarrassed. We were planning to go out for dinner at a Laotian restaurant (no such thing in Switzerland, where any kind of Asian food is overpriced and inferior to its California counterpart), but I was too drunk to function, so she resentfully brought me takeout that I ate all alone while she seethed with the kids in another room. I went to rehab a couple of days later. So next year I assume I’ll either have a quietly joyous, sober celebration with my beloved family, or I’ll wake up in an emergency room to find out that I am getting divorced. I hope it’s the former.
