Each and every Red country got some things done, and achieved some real benefits for their citizens, but they all also eventually shat the bed and made too many things worse.But the Yugoslavs had freedoms that people in the aligned parts of the Eastern Bloc did not, and for at least some of your history you were no worse off than the poorer countries in Western Europe. The FYR did okay by hard-left standards, basically, until it imploded.

>>217692167I want to add that a huge reason communist Yugoslavia stayed afloat economically is because during the Cold war it recieved generous loans from both the West and the Warsaw pact due to being unaligned politically. This allowed the regime to open a ton of state-owned companies and factories and to give employees good wages for the time. But the flaw of this was that a ton of these companies actually worked at a loss and were useless, but they couldn't close them down because way too many people relied on them for their livelyhood, so the government would just keep them on a payrol instead of firing them because the loans from abroad were coming in anyways. A random town would get one factory that would employ thousands of people and everyone else in the town could open shops that would offer services to those workers. So basically you had entire communities living off of government money and if the moneys stops coming in that town is doomed. And later that was what happened because in the 1980s we stopped getting loans from the USSR because they were collapsing and the West stopped giving them because it was obvious the USSR was done so there was no reason to appease us anymore as the sensible thing to do would be to join the West and the capitalist model. This was a disaster because most people were lazy and were taught not to be ambitious as the state has a job lined up for them anyways so they were retarded and didn't learn a single skill. Fast forward to Serbia in the 2000s the country was in enourmous debt and needed a quick way to get foreign investments - they sell a lot of state owned companies to foreigners for a quick influx of cash in the national budget so they can keep paying people in the public sector and give pensions. Result: new owners fire over 480k useless workers who did nothing and were only a waste of money (country's population is 6M). Lots of them closed down due to not being profitable soon after so those people got fired too

But obviously this country was absolutely terrified of communism throughout the 20th century. I assume that some of my countrymen eventually concluded that it didn’t work/wasn’t working, and they turned out to be right in the end (and the extent to which we actively contributed to its failure is highly debatable— we almost certainly accelerated its death, but much of its dysfunction was homemade). But before it started to fail, it spent a long time growing, and at least sort of working, sometimes better or faster than our Western capitalist alternatives worked. And whether it worked or not was irrelevant as long as it could still win (hearts, minds, influence, territory, resources, not necessarily in that order). That was an open question for decades, even as cracks were starting to show, and it made many powerful Americans absolutely shit themselves.
