Do the English feel culturally closer to the French or the Germans?
>>
>>217704981
All of them will be African in 2100 so they will be in a way all brothers.
>>
Can you explain why french people are mainly assholes
>>
They look down on both (undeservedly) and idolize the Americans instead (also undeservedly), but will rarely admit it openly
>>
>>217704981
To us. They speak a version of Old Dutch
>>
>>217704981
From the outside looking in they seem way more similar to French than German.

man you really are just stereotypes

Germanic is not the same as Germans. Britain was by far more influenced by Rome, then France and then Normans/Vikings.
>>
>>217705113
We're literally latin and they're germanic, we got nothing in common

>Britain was by far more influenced by Rome
Modern english culture comes from the english and saxon settlers, not from the britons. The britons themselves weren't even that much romanized as opposed to other provinces, and most people were still identifying as britons and spoke brittonic
>>
>>217705187
british nobles and upper class had long been educated in french.
>>
>>217705159
Roman culture died in the 5th century, we've been Anglo-Saxon every since unless you're part of the upper classes.

>>
>>217704981
We're a culture unique to Europe that doesn't really closely resemble anyone else. The French and the Germans are very culturally related to one another, but Britain stands alone.
>>

We are spiritually the same nation
>>

>>217705305
this is irrelevant when modern english culture has nothing to do with the people that came before them. with this logic you might as well say egyptians are hellenic and not arabic.
anything latin you can find in england comes from the normans and angevins

I suppose the average working Anglo is probably slightly more alike the average Frenchman than the average German in a cultural sense, aside from the cultural preference for beer over wine.

Our country rules and is the baseline of normalcy worldwide so we have a good reason to be smug, everyone that goes to france has a bad experience with french people to the point the japanese even have a word that means "disappointed by france" with kanji and everything

Never said anything about Britons, after Rome fell the British empire was heavily influenced by Rome, even now most countries follow roman administrative and legal rule.
>>217705265
>unless you're part of the upper classes.
Upper classes dictate the rules and how the country behaves. Just take a look at the modern English vocabulary, most of it comes from latin, despite English not being a latin language.

There's far more British-French interaction historically than British-German interaction. Of course, much of the genetic stock in GB is from Germans and Danes but you can say that Germanic Franks contributed a lot of the French genetics as well.

Looking at more recent history, which I think is most important for talking about the culture of today, Britain and France had a very similar colonial experience, both expanding and collapsing at the same points and being similarly vital to the nation. Britain and France also have an interestingly similar history with regard to industrial action over the 20th century.

All of these points are more or less irrelevant.

>>Monarchs are descended from William the Conqueror
They're also descended from Anglo-Saxon, German, and Dutch royal lines. In fact during WW1 the royal family changed their names to Windsor from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
>>Over a quarter of our vocabulary is Old French
A plurality of it is Germanic in origin.
>>
>>217705665
This makes me think of those French revolutionaries that thought Britain was gonna join their side because they too were enlightened king-beheaders and were heartbroken to find out the English want to kill them.

So what, you're saying that the Franks simply vanished at some point between establishing the Merovingian Kingdom and modern France

The remnants, the institution, its culture. It doesn't have to be at its peak to be influential.

The royal family also is fluent in French, a humiliation ritual to pay homage to their frog ancestors

Normans also buck broke Anglos from using cool archaic Germanic words like frith, overmorrow, and ereyesterday. Ffs, we even call dried grapes raisins
>>
>>217705773
>This makes me think of those French revolutionaries that thought Britain was gonna join their side because they too were enlightened king-beheaders and were heartbroken to find out the English want to kill them.
Nonsense. The royals had been invited back to general applause, the populace having decided that having Puritan government was not particularly well advised. The execution of the king was officially condemned and twelve remaining judges were tried and executed for it.
>>
>>217705782
i'm saying your point is irrelevant and the french are not comparable to the english. english people on average have a lot of ancestry from the old english and the saxons. they are both the anglo-saxons, and the britons that integrated into anglo-saxon culture. this mixture created one people with one culture and language.
but for us we had a germanic upper class that didn't mingle with the roman mass. they were very few and their genetic contribution to the larger population is basically irrelevant. noblemen were barely 5% of the total population. they never really disappeared into the population, they're just our modern upper class.

Langue d'oc/oïl were/are living latin languages. You should not confuse words from romance (vulgar latin) languages and real loan words taken from ecclesiastical/scientific latin (classical latin).
English has both, and French too has latin loans.

Wine is both reserved for very special celebrations (where beer is also drank a lot, to note), and negatively viewed as the go-to beverage for drunks (wine smashes you harder and faster than beer)

>Monarchs are descended from William the Conqueror
As well as Alfred the Great, Ine of Wessex and, indeed, Woden himself.
Plus, Franks and Normans were originally no less Germanic than Angles and Saxons, albeit latterly mixed with degenerate c*Lts and r*Mans and other such creatures.
>King of England is still called the Duke of Normandy
Only within the Norman territories that his ancestors conquered.
>Over a quarter of our vocabulary is Old French
The French language was pretty much invented in England, but the English language was historically recognised as 'Teutonic' like German. At the Council of Constance in the early 15th century, the French delegation rejected the English claim to nationhood by insisting that they be subsumed under the German one.
>The Royal blazon is still in French (dates back to Richard cœur de lion, a Plantagenet King that didn’t speak a lick of English)
The motto of the Prince of Wales is German. What though?
The claim that Richard spoke no English is based on his writing French and Occitan poetry, but makes little sense considering his father and brother knew English, and that his nephew was appointed 'King of the Romans' specifically on account of his Englishness making him better able to understand the similar German tongue than would a Frenchman

The core of the language is Germanic and all higher stuff is Latinate. This is mostly due to legalism and the fact that law was done mostly in French and Latin. Science later brought in a lot more Greek.
