I have two sons and am done reproducing. My wife and I were both kind of hoping for one of each, but no such luck. Obviously, they’re different and have different problems. Some of the things that will make you lose sleep as a parent will be different depending on whether you’re trying to raise boys or girls. But I honestly believe based on a large body of first-hand evidence that the overall level of stress equals out, whatever kinds of offspring you end up with.My sons appear to be becoming one jock (sporty/athletic kid) and one nerd (zero interest in sports, intense fascination with and apparent aptitude for math, coding and game development). Both of these descriptions are incomplete and reductive. But I assume that if one had been a daughter, she would end up something more or less like one or the other of the kids I got. Hopefully smart (both wife and I are brainy, bookish, and highly educated), maybe with some creative instincts (jock son also enjoys writing and painting, nerd son plays the piano and pals around with theater kids in addition to more STEM-adjacent geeks). And hopefully my wife and I would be able to raise her to share some of our core values (mostly just not being an asshole—be honest, be kind, try hard). Seems to be going okay so far with the boys, but there’s a limit to how much control any parent has over how their children turn out.
