There is something so unique and beaitiful about Islamic religious space composition and reject of images... The unnecessary idols for prayer because the rites and symbols that fill the environment are sufficient; the unnecessary epicenter of religious activity because all sacred space is equal since holiness is manifested to all equally... the presence of the calligraphic, geometric, and vegetal art nourishing the religious person without the need for obscene idols, in compliance with God's commandments against idolatry


The mosque in the south of the country, next to the ports of Mare Nostrum (the great sea where human history is made and consummated) and in the region where the Phoenicians and Greeks thought that Hercules-Melqart was buried (Cadiz), looking east from where the light comes, contrasts sharply with the tomb of Santiago, in the Atlantic (the vastness of barbaric nothingness where the sun dies), next to the cape that the Romans called Finis Terrae, in a land of illiterate barbarians who rejected the light of the east.

To me the ultimate victory of islam over christianity religiously in Spain is that the Mosque of Córdoba remains a global religious landmark visited anually by millions after many centuries, while the supposed tomb of James, venerated by the Castilians, fell into oblivion centuries ago. Spirituality and divine presence are more evident in Córdoba than in Santiago de Compostela, in the Mediterranean than in the Atlantic.

Muslims worship Allah among a forest of living pillars, Christians worship and perform their rites in a tomb; the former is a religion of the living, the latter of the dead.

And this is very revealing.
