I don’t think the most popular statistics (40-50% of first marriages, and over 60% of second marriages, are said to end in divorce) are necessarily totally reliable, as they were compiled by the American Psychological Association; people with a tendency to attempt marriage and fail repeatedly could easily be overrepresented in shrinks’ samples. But it’s probably close enough. Roughly half of my childhood friends came from broken homes, some of my adult friends who have been married have later split up. I think it’s less than 50% divorced in my own personal sample, but there are several in there who’ve been divorced twice. I don’t know anyone personally who’s been divorced three or more times, but I’m not that old yet. I assume I will eventually.
