Most common among communities that maintain, or think they maintain, cultural traditions from the old country. Also Euro-Americans who’ve either got living memory of the new immigrant experience, or whose families have embraced a sense of historical strife/discrimination/disadvantage as part of their story, whether or not anyone alive actually experienced it. Biggest examples are probably Irish Americans and Italian Americans, who as poor Catholics sometimes had a harder time earning White American status than people from Protestant countries and people who arrived with money did. Italians in particular were perceived as ethnic minorities at least as alien as modern Latinos until surprisingly recently.And some of the Scandinavian descendants in the upper Midwest enjoy identifying as such, at least when observing retained versions of various celebrations and traditions, and also when making fun of one another (Americans with Swedish ancestors living in Minnesota and the Dakotas have historically told jokes about the stupidity and lack of sophistication their Norwegian American neighbors, etc.) And unlike some groups of European descent, the American Scandies have never really faced significant hostility or hardship (possibly apart from the inherent difficulties in farming and the weather on the Great Plains).

when european immigration to the US was still prevalent they were still definitely referred to as irish-americans, italian-americans etc. But eventually immigration from europe slowed down and they just became americans
