Depending on what you plan to do, it might actually be a pretty good idea

I can imagine living off the land physically not being a problem and being able to scrounge around and do odd jobs locally to subsidize the rest.

But property taxes would destroy you unless you were in bumfuck nowhere and the land and weather in bumfuck probably isn’t that good for farming anyway.

You don't become a farmer in my country. Farming here is basically serfdom. Nobody hires to pay farmers here, the farmers pay tribute to the land owner.
