Some have it due to Celtic ancestry, the Welsh specifically often are darker featured and have black and/or wavy or curly hair. Most of our immigration (as in, immigrants who contributed to the native population's makeup, not the recent slew of third worlders) hasn't been from the south but largely Northern European countries. We are pretty diverse in terms of looks.
