I think it's more in terms that it adds flavor rather than that it's spicy.

Because they aren't spices, they're fats. They serve a totally different role in the dish. Herbs aren't spices either.
Salt and pepper are spices and you don't really need much more than that as long as you're using a blend of herbs and properly cooking your food to ensure maximum flavor (browning off the meat first, removing the water from vegetables, not overcooking, etc).
